Rock and Flow Festival stresses the importance of safety when using flow with fire. Before you have access to the fire circle at the event you will be required to take one of our fire safety classes. We would like to highlight some important safety guidelines, which we will explore in more detail at your class.
-
Be Present & Clear Headed: Pay attention to your surroundings, your perimeter, location of your closest safety, adequate space between you and other performers in the circle, and your audience. Alcohol and drugs have no place in your body within the fire circle. If you plan to light up your props, don't partake in anything that can alter your judgement, perception or reaction time. If you are inebriated, stoned, or otherwise altered, you will not be allowed to fuel or participate in the circle, or will be asked to leave the circle. There will be no alcohol, drugs or smoking tobacco in or near the fire circle so please be considerate and step away from the group if you want to smoke/vape. Again, Rock and Flow Festival is a family friendly festival and alcohol and drugs are prohibited on camp grounds.
-
Clothing: Wear tightly woven natural fibers like cotton, wool, silk, and leather. Avoid synthetic fibers, and thin or gauzy garments, things that dangle, flowy skirts and loose baggy clothes. Fuel transfer or a tangled prop can cause severe burns from a prop trapped against your body, flammable or melting clothing.
-
Hair: Long loose hair can be a fire hazard for you. Tie back or braid it, wear a hat, or wet your hair to protect it. Avoid flammable hair products.
-
Prop Maintenance: Always check your props each time you fuel up. Look for loose connections, excessively worn or damaged wick or other components. A broken prop or damaged wick can endanger the safety of yourself and your audience.
-
Safeties: Make sure you spot a safety in the area you are to use a lit prop. Safeties should be focused on the performers in the circle, clear headed and sober, and not distracted, with a safety towel at the ready to extinguish a prop brought to you, or to use on a performer on fire. A fire towel can be a chemically treated towel (do not wash), pure cotton, or a wool blanket works well too. Having and being a fire safety will be covered in detail at the class.
-
Fueling & Spinning off: There will be a fueling station and spin off station. Excessive fuel on your prop can spray on other performers in the circle, and on your audience, making them potentially more flammable. Excessive fuel on your prop is also more likely to transfer fuel and fire onto you or those close to you. Spraying fuel is also not kind to the environment. How to fuel and spin off will be discussed at the class.
-
Fuel: White gas is the standard. Bring fuel if you plan to light up at the event. Other fuels will be discussed in the class. Avoid lamp oil/citronella oil. Fuel for fire breathing will be discussed in the class. Additives for colored flames are not recommended in the fire circle.
This is by no means a comprehensive list of safety guidelines. We look forward to seeing you at the fire safety class!
